A RAP about An Example for the World to See

As part of the Youth Sunday service, we had a RAP that stirred our hearts. The group consists of Jamal, Patrick, Kristin, KaMaya, and Jay. (See Rashad's sermon in a separate sermon page: "An Example for the World to See") Here are the lyrics:

I'm living in the future forget about my past Every time I put myself first society put me last man Trying to live my life like I'm fast man, Pressing on the gas because the future is the future and the past is in the past Asking myself will I last in this life I'm living Hanging ‘round with the wrong people with the wrong intentions Did I mention I met God? That' how I been living

Christian rap all in my system Bumping these new tracks yeah I'm trying to make a living While my friends steal and go to church and ask for forgiveness While I'm in church listening but thats just who i am man Staying young like Peter Pan while I'm flowing like a fan While I'm cashing in like a transaction Breaking it down just like a fraction And that's just how it happens

Every day we wake up ain't worried bout tomorrow 'Cause we know there ain't no promises Living while we can (‘cause that's just who we are)

Fake friends, wannabe's this the life that’s surrounding me Drug dealing, selling rocks, baby brothers and sisters getting popped Drug life, thug life, why my life sophisticated? I just wanna be great, I just wanna get educated Grew up without a mother, really didn’t have a father figure Growing up as a stereotype, seeing prostitutes, and drug dealers I don’t wanna be another statistic, I’m tired being part of that stereotype I wanna be the one that made it, the one everyone sees and say he’s alright

Tired of hearing the bang, losing my friends to the system Looked upon as a suspect, but feeling like a victim The weight of the world on my shoulders, it’s getting heavy like boulders I’m tired of carrying these burdens can someone realize that I’m hurting? I’m breaking the chains, pushing it behind I’m coming out the dark I’m coming alive

I’m like a lion when he sees his prey, I accelerate forward into another day No looking back, no holding me down. I am no longer hood bound I’ve done made it I’m on the top, always reaching up so I won’t drop

Every day we wake up ain't worried bout tomorrow 'Cause we know there ain't no promises Living while we can (‘cause that's just who we are)

Yooo... I grew up in a place where everybody keep on molding me Tellin me who I’ma be, PYT a prodigy And all this negativity is floating all around me

I’m the island they the sea, see I gotta drop ‘em like a phone call, Verizon So they don’t get no signal They be steppin’ on my toes trying to be all in my business Back, back, ‘cause I ain’t tryna listen I’m just trying to be a Christian and you will not catch me slippin’, oh!

Ooh I won’t let 'em change us oh no This is our walk our road This is the life we chose, chose Every day we wake up ain't worried bout tomorrow 'Cause we know there ain't no promises Living while we can ('cause that's just who we are)

Cause that's just who we are
